This study was carried out to examine if Holotrichia (HTC) inhibits oxidant-induced lipid peroxidation and thereby produces protective effect against renal cell injury. t-butylhydroperoxide (t-BHP) increased lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent manner in renal cortical slices. HTC extraction inhibited the lipid peroxidation induced by t-BHP in a dose-dependent fashion. Hg also increased lipid peroxidation, which was prevented by 5% HTC extraction. In normal slices, HTC significantly decreased endogenous lipid peroxidation. HTC at a concentration of 5% prevented almost completely the cell injury induced by 1 mM t-BHP. Similarly, HTC exerted protective effect against the cell injury and lipid peroxidation caused by another oxidant H_2O_2. These results suggest that HTC is a powerful antioxidant which prevents the cell injury and lipid peroxidation in renal tissues.
